Abstract: The Congress of the United States passed the Clean Air Act in 1967. The push
for the Clean Air Act was the result of some large industrial mishaps. The Environmental
Protection Agency (EPA), created by this legislation, was put in charge of improving the
quality of the air in the United States by enacting National Ambient Air Quality Standards.
The original act said standards needed to be developed for lead, nitrogen oxides, sulfur
dioxide, carbon monoxide, ozone, and particulate matter. I will talk about the national
standards and how the states ensure that these standards are met through air monitoring
networks. The monitoring methods for each pollutant be discussed.
